Sheryl leads the Microbiology lab at the Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland. The lab handles a wide variety of responsibilities, and the hospital serves people from all over the world. Their staff alone represent 80+ countries!
The Challenge
The bustling lab deals with several high-risk pathogens and has to offer diagnostic accuracy, efficiently. This need is heightened since Sheryl is the only expert in her chain of command familiar with this diagnostic area.
Physicians at the Holy Cross Hospital rely on Sheryl’s lab to help identify unknown pathogens. Additionally, the microbiology lab is a Sentinel lab for biothreat agents. It packages and ships specimens to the Maryland State Laboratory for biothreat agents, special pathogens, and surveillance organisms.
They are also the go-to resource on specimen collection and PPE buddies for their Automated Laboratory partners for routine patient testing and Person Under Investigation (PUI) for special pathogens.
