Microbiology module compared with Bergey's manual

Bergey's Manual is basically a very large textbook, containing ALL bacteria [Human, environmental, animal, etc]. The text is divided by class of bacteria, then species by species. Gives much more in the way of biochemical and other tests.

GIDEON is much more up to date than Bergey's. New taxa are added within one week of publication. Bergey's is updated only once every several years. Bergey's has no option for identifying bacteria based on phenotypic tests as such. There are several 'keys' = algorithm trees starting with gram + or -, then coccus or bacillus, etc.

Although the reader can 'Characterize' a given organism - photocopy the text for that species, there is no interactive function to compare user-selected organisms.

Bergey's is limited to Microbiology. Many of the Bacteria in GIDEON are also represented in the Epidemiology and Therapy Modules = Clinical features, Therapy, Vaccines, Images, Maps, Country-specific epidemiology, etc.

Additionally as GIDEON is electronic, all information can be emailed, printed, copied and pasted into PowerPoint very easily.

From our testimonials page:

"With today's computer literate students, I was looking in the internet for a supplement to Bergey's Manual of bacteriology, when I came across GIDEON ... I currently use GIDEON in two classes, microbiology and a follow-up seminar on emerging infectious disease." George Bazinet, Professor, Siena College
