Epidemiology - Diseases

is divided into two columns. On the left is a list of diseases and a window for Fingerprint and Synonyms. Under the column title are two buttons:

• Fingerprint - Displays the Fingerprint options.
• Synonyms -  Lists disease synonyms.

The Epidemiology Fingerprint is a valuable tool for the diagnostician. You can use it to create disease profiles and to generate reports on the status of diseases in any country.

The user employs the Epidemiology Fingerprint Option to generate a list of diseases that fit an epidemiological profile. The following pull down lists are displayed:

• Agent - Classification (e.g., virus, parasite) and taxonomic designation.
• Vector - An arthropod or other living carrier which transports an infectious agent from an infected organism or reservoir to a susceptible individual or immediate surroundings.
• Vehicle - The mode of transmission for an infectious agent. This generally implies a passive and inanimate (i.e., non-vector) mode.
• Reservoir - Any animal, arthropod, plant, soil or substance in which an infectious agent normally lives and multiplies, on which it depends primarily for survival, and where it reproduces itself in such a manner that it can be transmitted to a susceptible host.
• Country - In general, this list of country names corresponds to accepted geographical and political designations. Click to display country synonyms.

Fingerprint has two buttons:

• Reset - reverts to the original diseases list.
• Search > - Generates the list of diseases.

Synonyms button lists disease synonyms. Click on the other name of the disease to jump to the relevant disease in GIDEON.

The right column comprises a window with four tabs on top, and a Personal Notes window on the bottom. The tabs are:

The box appears in the lower right section of this window. The user can enter notes that will be associated with the disease. The notes can be modified or deleted. For Institutional users, these notes may be altered only by administrator.
