Traveling with GIDEON
Among its many functions, GIDEON has always followed the status of travel-related diseases: the country-specific status of all relevant conditions, vaccine requirements, outbreaks of disease among tourists and expatriates, etc. A module has been added which allows the health professional – or traveler – to review every aspect of travel and health at the click of a button.
When the user clicks the new Travel tab at the top of the main Epidemiology screen, the following appears:

At this point, the user may select either a region, or country of interest by clicking on the relevant heading in the screens to the left. Two tabs at the top of the central screen access information for the health Professional or the Traveler himself. The third tab is used to explore country-specific information regarding every infectious disease relevant to travel.
Let's say that we are planning a trip to Kenya. When we click on Kenya, the central screen first generates a list of diseases of interest in this specific country.

GIDEON has been designed to list only those diseases for which further details are available in the GIDEON Epidemiology module. By clicking on the disease of interest, the user will access the full text of this specific note. Diseases for which outbreaks of interested to the traveler are displayed in red, with the year and number of cases indicated. A preview of this note pops up as the mouse passes this disease name. In the above picture, information regarding Escherichia coli diarrhea in Kenya has popped up as a 'mouse-over' screen.
The Professional tab generates text regarding all relevant issues regarding the geographical region in question. The health professional can use this to advise the prospective traveler, with access to specific subject links for more detailed information.

The Traveler tab is designed to generate useful information for the travelers themselves. Subjects covered are not limited to infectious diseases, but also explore food, water, mosquito repellants, injuries, violence, swimming and diving .. and all other subjects related to healthy tourism.

Clicking on
opens a new window with an expanded display of the content.

Information accessed by the Professional and Traveler tabs is generated by the United States Centers for Disease Control, and is updated frequently. All material in this and other portions of the travel module may be printed out or transmitted by e-mail.
